‘I’m a writer, biographer and broadcaster who’s always been driven by curiosity. I love the challenge of setting it off in others. Mentoring seems to me to be a valuable exercise in sharing. Whatever it is that I have learned, over long years of quite hard work, there are still new challenges and fresh projects that make me get up, energetic and (usually!) positive, in the morning. Places and people are my material, both from the past and from the present (I cannot see how you can learn from history without grasping the present). Nothing is boring.’
